OK, I've used the idea of a gnarled/bent old tree to get the shapes but I'm no quite happy with my origainal proportion. I've made some variations and if anyone can give me feedback I'd be greatful.
for me, it's number 6 and number 8 - they just seem less awkward-seeming to me - more credible - and number 9 too; somehow the balance between the over-hang of the head and the belly feels more aligned, and the drawings feel as if they're actually standing up. Interestingly, these are all the 'least' stylised, most human, but I don't necessarily think that's a problem; certainly, though, I consider re-sizing/re-shaping his nose, and thinking more closely about his wardrobe and how that can add interest and additional cultural 'texture' to your design.
This is looking more interesting, I like the more exaggerating shapes in 4 and 10 :)
